Charlotte Mason was a revolutionary thinker, educator, and reformer who deviated from the norms of Victorian England. She believed that all children could achieve at the highest levels when nurtured in the right environment because they are image-bearers of Christ.
Her approach supports developmentally appropriate, holistic education that promotes lifelong learning. Mason advocated for a broad curriculum that she called “an abundant feast” of the best literature, art, science, math, music, and ideas.
A Mason education involves nurturing children in the right atmosphere, training them in good habits, discipling them with scripture, and making relationships with things, people, and books so that knowledge becomes intrinsic and useful as part of God’s plan for each life.
The Charlotte Mason Approach
Crossroads Christian School’s student creed is:
“I am a child of God, created in His image. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. I ought to serve with excellence in thought, word, and deed. I will strive to complete all God’s plans for me.”
Using the Charlotte Mason approach, we have created a quality curriculum that upholds curiosity and continuous learning and supports God’s plan for our children’s lives.
Core Tenets
We can separate our school environment into four spheres: Atmosphere, Discipline, Life, and Relationships.
Atmosphere
Children are created in the image of God and are naturally curious, creative, and capable.
Discipline
Children flourish in a structured but developmentally appropriate environment and are well-served by forming good habits.
Life
Children who learn at the appropriate pace and level and who are nourished by ideas and living books will develop a lifelong love of learning.
Relationships
Children acquire knowledge by making relationships with people, places, things, and ideas. They can express and use what becomes intrinsic rather than memorized or assessed.
